E. E. “Doc” Smith. THE HISTORY OF CIVILIZATION, 6 volumes. Reading: Fantasy Press, Inc., 1955. Signed, Limited Edition #33 of 75 Sets of The First Printing of Each Volume, Numbered, Autographed, and Bound in Half Leather. In original glassine wrappers. Volume One Inscribed and Signed by Smith: “To Ruth Dickinson. With sincere thanks for helping make this new venture--new, I think, to all ???--a reality. In high appreciation, Edward E. Smith, Ph.D.” Each of the other five volumes are also numbered #33 (of 75 sets) and signed in full by Smith. This set comprises the Lensman series (Triplanetary, First Lensman, Galactic Patrol, Gray Lensman, Second State Lensman, and Children of the Lens), printed by Lloyd Arthur Eshbach at the Fantasy Press from original plates on fine linen weave paper and bound in red half-leather with a special autograph page, all signed by the author and numbered. According to Chalker and Owings in their book “The Science Fantasy Publishers,” sixty sets presold before publication and were inscribed to specific individuals, of which the set being offered here is one. The set was issued in a box, which is extremely rare and almost impossible to find. This is a magnificent NEAR FINE set in VERY GOOD PLUS original glassine jackets which are slightly clouded along edges. The previous owner wrote (in very small script) what appears to be an inventory number at the very top of the rear free endpaper on each volume, but this certainly does not distract in any way from the quality of these volumes. THE HISTORY OF CIVILIZATION is one of the most prized works in science fiction and publishing collecting and is rarely if ever seen on the market! Major defects (if any) have been noted in the description, but please, if you have any questions, e-mail me since no scan is available.
